Abstract :
Background: Painful diabetic neuropathy (PDN) is a debilitating condition which involves distal autonomic and sensory dysfunction, predominantly causing severe burning, tingling, and lancinating pain and is associated with poor quality of life, not being effectively treated with conservative management. Neuromodulation is a newer treatment modality which can effectively manage it, though its acceptance in India is not very promising. Objectives: To assess the knowledge, attitude and practices among physicians in India, on the utilization of neuromodulation as a treatment modality for the management of PDN. Design: A Questionnaire was sent out for online completion using Google Survey in August 2022 among practicing physicians in India. The response data was entered in Microsoft Excel, analyzed and presented as percentage. Results: Out of the 71 respondents; 35.2% come across at least 1 PDN patient weekly basis however 23.9% examine at least one PDN patient every day. With regards to knowledge about Neuromodulation, 66.7% physicians were aware about neuromodulation as a treatment modality for PDN, of which 71.4% and 83.3% had heard about noninvasive and minimally invasive neuromodulation techniques respectively. 97.1% respondents felt that neuromodulation is safe and can effectively improve the quality of life of PDN patients. When asked about non utilization of SCS as treatment modality; 60% felt that high cost makes it unaffordable. Majority felt that there is need of adequate training and were interested in attending training session on neuromodulation. Conclusion: There was fair knowledge about neuromodulation use for PDN and majority had a positive attitude towards its utilization.
